Nauroti Devi
Nauroti Devi is not just a grassroots leader; she is a living symbol of resistance, justice, and transformative courage. A key member of the Rajasthan Mazdoor Kisan Morcha, she stands at the forefront of India’s growing Dalit consciousness—challenging centuries of caste inequality with fearless resolve and legal insight.
From mobilizing workers for minimum wages to standing against violence on women and regressive practices like Sati, Nauroti Devi has consistently chosen action over silence. Her historic leadership in 1981, when she organised a strike for 700 daily-wage laborer's in her village Harmada, laid the foundation for a landmark Supreme Court judgment in 1983. That ruling reshaped labour rights nationwide and forced amendments to the Rajasthan Famine Relief Act, guaranteeing minimum wages under all circumstances.
For Nauroti Devi, access to information became a tool of liberation. As a Panchayat member, she exposed hidden entitlements, unlocked long-denied resources for workers, and proved that power can be reclaimed from the ground up. A fearless advocate in landmark campaigns like the Bhanwari Devi case, she continues to evolve—learning computers, teaching village youth, and redefining leadership.
Her journey proves one truth: when courage meets conscience, history changes.
